Our History

In 1976, the outdoor division of Pearl Metal Co., Ltd., a company specializing in household products, took its first steps. Inspired by the image of robust stags leading their herds across the land, assuming the vital role of guiding their companions to safety and maintaining unity within the group, a strong sense of trust and reliance was formed. Channeling this concept of the stag's leadership, synonymous with 'a dependable presence amidst the great outdoors,' the all-encompassing outdoor brand 'CAPTAIN STAG' was established. In 2012, 'Captain Stag Co., Ltd.' was formed as an entity.

As outdoor leisure, including family camping and barbequing, has become an integral part of our culture, it's no exaggeration to credit 'CAPTAIN STAG' for popularizing these activities in Japan. Over the years, they've introduced numerous epoch-making products to the world.

Message from the Founder

Born as the third son in a woodworking household in the metalworking town of Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, in 1947, I, Fumio Takanami, embarked on a journey that eventually led to the founding of 'Pearl Metal Co., Ltd.' in 1967. Together with my elder brother, Hisao Takanami, we established this company to sell locally crafted metal products. Engaged in the design, development, and sales of household items, a pivotal moment struck during a trip to the United States in 1975. While passing through a park, I witnessed a family joyfully barbecuing on a large grill, and it left a profound impact on me.

'I want to recreate the barbecue culture I saw in America here in Japan.'

Back then, there were no barbecue grills or even grill grates like we have today. So, I pondered how to proceed. Instead of a conventional grate, I ingeniously utilized a metal doormat. I removed the bristles from the doormat, built a makeshift fire pit with bricks by the riverside, and grilled meat with gusto. It was from this moment that I delved into the development of outdoor products.

From then on, I dedicated myself wholeheartedly to the relentless pursuit of creating barbecue grills. Incorporating various ideas to cater to the needs of Japan, in 1976, we finally managed to release the 'Jumbo Barbecue Grill Type A,' manufactured right in our hometown of Sanjo City. This marked the first step in what would later become our extensive product lineup.

For the next 40 years, we've been at the forefront of the industry, and time has flown by unnoticed. Moving forward, we remain committed to developing products that bring joy to many.

During its initial inception, the brand primarily focused on barbecue grills and outdoor tableware. Subsequently, the product line expanded to encompass a wide array of items, ranging from tents, sleeping bags, tables, chairs, and various accessories. The continual pursuit of development extended even to small accessories. As of now, the 'CAPTAIN STAG' product lineup has grown so extensive that it can cater to every camping need. The pride lies in the fact that such a diverse range of products is only available from 'CAPTAIN STAG'.
